(A Sacred Sandwich Repost from 2008) Officials at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church report that a vandal attacked their parish during their annual “Trunk-or-Treat” festivities on Halloween. According to Fr. Michael Donnelly, someone placed a paper bag filled with Luther’s “95 Theses” on the church’s front step, set it on fire, then knocked on the door and ran away. When Donnelly answered the door, he quickly stomped on the burning bag to put out the flames.

“Needless to say, I got Theses all over my shoes,” Father Donnelly stated. “It was disgusting.”

Witnesses at the church reported seeing a treat-or-treater, dressed as a monk, running across the street towards Christ Lutheran Church after the incident. As of now, police have no suspects, but believe it was the work of a copycat reformer.

Though Father Donnelly has asked the Blessed Virgin to have pity on the prankster, he still blames the Protestant Reformation for destroying a perfectly good pagan holiday. “Whatever happened to good old-fashioned Halloween activities like toilet-papering the trees or soaping the windows? Ever since Luther pulled his stunt on October 31st, we’ve had nothing but trouble. In fact, just last year someone duct-taped the 95 Theses on our front glass door because they couldn’t nail it up. Do you have any idea how hard it is to remove that sticky residue from glass after you pull off duct tape? These people are barbarians. I’m starting to think disbanding the Inquisition was a big mistake.”

Rev. Peter Reinhardt of neighboring Christ Lutheran Church had no comment on the incident, but was last seen sporting a suspicious grin and a large shaved spot on the top of his head.

You have to watch out for those Theses. They’re everywhere! Clever little things they are, too…

It was a legitimate protest against FEEcal indulgences.

He should’ve left a burning papal bull!

They’d be so lucky to have such a deed occur on their doorstep. Of course the only excitement that they actually get at that parish, is when their Mary statue breaks out in a sweat during Easter!

Are you sure it wasn’t a bag from Worms?

  • Comment by Peter Hamm — November 3, 2010 @ 8:40 am

Well, Luther had that whole diet of worms thing going… of COURSE he had stomach problems…

That’ll make anybody leave theses on the local church doorstep…

The original post of this two years ago was one of my first introductions to SS. I have laughed about this parody ever since. Glad you reposted it!

It’s interesting that both Rev. Peter Reinhardt of the neighboring Christ Lutheran Church and Fr. Michael Donnelly have something in common. They both have titles before their names. Did the Reformation not run it’s full course?

    LOL!

It takes a great deal more courage to lovingly confront a Catholic priest or member with their own idolatry and with the truth than to dress up and burn a bag on their front step. Let’s keep our humour honouring to Christ. Luther had a valid reason for doing what he did, but there were thousands before him who died for holding the truth before he came along.

    Yeah, that’s kinda the point.

I mean by “confront”, to actually speak to the person face to face and engage his/her mind and heart with the definitions of terms and the actual authority of scripture over the catholic church and pope. We do this when the opportunity presents, and our relative in Mexico has been involved in ministry for years, winning many catholics there to Christ. Luther’s fight was not only for right teachings, but freedom to believe them. We have this freedom now, and that’s where our fight really is.

    Phil’s mum…

It’s funny you should use Luther to chastise Angus. You obviously are unware that Luther endorsed and even used scatological humor to make fun of the pope and the roman catholic church.

I would suggest you look into the 1545 Depictions of the Papacy. There you will find why you totally failed with your above post.

If you think Angus’s humor is offensive, you don’t know Luther at all.

    Cheers!
