Little Douglas Pagitt, Robert Bell, and Anthony Jones were into a "new-and-improved" variety of Emerging amusements. Spurgeon warned them they were turning their churches into "play-houses" allowing the values and techniques of the theater to invade the sanctuary of the Lord (as well as used couches in the round).

All of the other preachers, used to laugh and call him names, they wouldn't let poor Charlie join in emergent games.

He wouldn't look for "his best life" of his time...
He wouldn't tolerate the Roman Catholic ways...

Yes, he may have stood alone, no other pop leader of his time would follow suit to the straight and narrow, but his writings and teachings are still being read. People still search and find sound teaching from his material...

While this is truly funny and I enjoyed the humor of it, as in all good humor there is a hidden truth in it that makes it so. Baptists today face a similar downgrade. When we allow ourselves to be sucked into emergent church feelings that disguise themselves as theology. Or, when we allow ourselves to sign declarations, no matter how well meaning, that give tacit theological credence to other signators that we have nothing in common with, we are already sliding away from the faith once delivered to the saints. We would rather experience God than truly know Him...
