The Sacred Sandwich

A couple years ago, I purchased a copy of John Bunyan’s The Holy War, published by the American Baptist Publication Society in 1852. When it arrived in the mail and I was able to inspect my purchase for the first time, I was excited to find a secret treasure inside the pages: a small printed card from 1885 that announced a Sunday night sermon series on Bunyan’s Holy War to be held at the Baptist Church in Dixon (Kansas, I think). Nothing of real value, of course, but it is a wonderful reminder of the saints that have come before us who have preached, studied, and cherished the gospel truth through the ages. What a great thought that someone once owned this book and used it during a congregational study in their church 123 years ago! — Angus  (Click on the image to see the card in its entirety)

Ah, methinks this a most excellent pleasure to allow into the eye-gate. The saints of old had most blessed fare; we today wander from empty manger to barren pasture; our springs are muddied by the hooves of goats. Twill be so sweet to go back and converse with friend Bunyan, thankee for the reminder. Perchance there will be a few hardy souls willing to emulate the dear pastor of Baptist Church, Dixon?

If memory serves, the book was purchased from Wichita, KS, so I assume Dixon was in Kansas. There is a Dixon township south of Wichita, but I don’t know if that is from where the card comes. I couldn’t find any mention of a Dixon Baptist Church, KS on the internet, although there is one in the immediate area. The mystery continues. I wish the card had more information!

That is a wonderful reminder of how the true saints worshiped God in the “good ol’ days”.

Actually having a sermon series on a book that you could sink your spiritual teeth into, and not the junk food messages from new age and pop Christian babble.
