O show me not my Savior dying,
As on the cross He bled;
Nor in the tomb, a captive lying,
For He has left the dead.
Then bid me not that form extended
For my Redeemer own,
Who, to the highest heavens ascended,
In glory fills the throne.

Weep not for Him at Calvary’s station,
Weep only for thy sins;
View where He lay with exultation,
’Tis there our hope begins.
Yet stay not there, thy sorrows feeding,
Amid the scenes He trod;
Look up, and see Him interceding
At the right hand of God.

Still in the shameful cross I glory,
Where His dear blood was spilt:
His shameful cross, set forth before me,
Hath canceled all my guilt.
Yet what, ’mid conflict and temptation,
Shall strength and honor give?
He lives, the Captain of Salvation,
Therefore His servants live.

By death, He death’s dark king defeated,
And overcame the grave:
Rising, the triumph He completed;
He lives, he reigns to save.
Heaven’s happy myriads bow before Him:
He comes, the Judge of men:
These eyes shall see Him, and adore Him,
Lord Jesus, own me then.

    Many thanks for this reminder of our glorious Savior’s sacrifice and victory. For when were dead in sins He died for His elect, not according to the will of man, but of will of God. To Him be all honor and glory and not shared with any man (or woman).

    Amen. I thought this hymn was an amazingly poetic overview of Christ’s power and victory in redeeming His elect. We glory in the cross, but we do not dwell on the grave because it has no power over us as Christ’s own.

    Matthew Henry, says of his father Philip Henry, that every Lord’s Day, his father’s greeting was, “He is risen, He is risen indeed!”

    He has risen… He is risen and coming soon to a planet near you.

    Rev 22:20 He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming quickly.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. 21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.

    He lives! Every day is the Lord’s day, because He made them. Not just once or twice a year for those who only go to church at Christmas and Easter, and not just on Sundays.

    He is risen indeed! The lyrics here really do mean something. Please correct the “are” in the second stanza to “our”.

    Good spot, Suzanne. It’s been like that for a year and I never noticed it. I couldn’t change the illustration, but I can replace it with the correct words. That’s what I want people to see.

    For us and for our salvation
    he came down from heaven:
    by the power of the Holy Spirit
    he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
    and was made man.

    For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
    he suffered death and was buried.

    On the third day he rose again
    in accordance with the Scriptures;
    he ascended into heaven
    and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

    He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
    and his kingdom will have no end.

    I know this comment is really belated, but I was reviewing old posts. This blog is a joy, and even an exhortation. Thanks Angus.

    The hymn strongly reminded me of John Bunyan’s pilgrim Christian’s words at the cross in Pilgrim’s Progress:

    “Thus far did I come laden with my sin,
    Nor could aught ease the grief that I was in,
    Till I came hither. What a place is this!
    Must here be the beginning of my bliss?
    Must here the burden fall from off my back?
    Must here the strings that bound it to me crack?
    Blest cross! Blest sepulchre! Blest, rather, be
    The Man that there was put to shame for me!”
